The Solar Living Center is 12 stunning acres of gardens, ponds, and natural building structures.  It was purchased by John Schaeffer in the mid-1990's from the California Highway Department which had been using the site as a rubble-field.  John's vision and entreprenurial spirit turned a wasteland with only one tree into the beautiful oasis it is today.

Today the Solar Living Center is a mini green business park - home to the Real Goods eco-store, the 501 (c)(3) sustainable education nonprofit Solar Living Institute, and Emerald Pharms.

Charmingly quirky, the site hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors per year arriving for lots of different reasons; whether it's a rest stop off Highway 101, an Air Bnb Tiny House guest, a camper, a shopper, a sustainability student, part of a tour group, or as a volunteer, intern or festival goer all are welcome to come and explore new ways to adopt a more sustainable, resiliant lifestyle.
