Its a bug eat bug world. Learning to work with naturally occurring enemies of the insect pests in your landscape will reduce the time and expense of maintaining it. This session will help you set up the landscape to supply pollen and nectar that are supplemental food for many insect predators and parasites. Mulch, compost, water and artificial honeydew are other means to draw in beneficial insects. Then selecting the appropriate beneficials and proper methods for releasing them and taking care of them round out this introduction to applied biocontrol.

Flies can be easily managed around animals and compost yards using a biological program. There are 4 life stages of the fly, with strategies to reduce each stage. Cockroaches can be managed using borate based baits, traps and egg parasites.

Main Points:

  • Modifying habitat to attract beneficial insects to effect biocontrol.
  • Selecting beneficial insects to introduce for particular pests.
  • Releasing and fostering beneficial insects.
