Joan Weir

Joan Weir, licensed General Contractor, owns J.J. Design & Renovations, a Bay Area residential remodeling company with interests in sustainable and environmentally responsible building management procedures. Ms. Weir received her general contractors license in 1986. Her crafts background started in metal working as a journey-level welder during the early 1970's. In 1980 she transitioned into residential plumbing working for The Solar Center, installing solar panels throughout the Bay Area. Ms. Weir has been a journey-level member of four different unions. She helped found Tradeswomen Inc., a nonprofit organization supporting women in nontraditional work. Ms. Weir's love of teaching brought her to work with Youth Employment Partnership developing The Youth Build program in West Oakland . This program trained 62 young adult men and women while remodelling five crack houses.The program also built two new homes from the ground up in less than two years. Recently, she has taught home and building repair for West Contra Costa County Adult Education. Ms. Weir has a lifelong interest in mentoring people interested in a construction career.


The Solar Living Institute is a 501 (c)(3) educational nonprofit organization offering instruction in solar training and sustainable practices.  Founded in 1998, we have been providing professional solar training and a wide array of sustainability courses for 20 years. Our courses are taught by experienced practitioners who bring years of real world knowledge to the classroom with a focus on helping students prepare for job opportunities, start businesses, and live more sustainably.
