Greetings,
It's been a busy month here at the Solar Living
Institute. Staff has been on the road touring as participants at the
Solar Power 2008 conference in San Diego, and
with the Bioneers in San
Rafael. And we've hired 2 new employees, Shari Bainbridge
in our accounting office, and Brenda Reed as our administrative assistant. Meanwhile the interns have finished
their latest project, building the chicken coop -- and the chickens have moved in!
There will be no let up this month. We're greatly
anticipating the national election in less than a week and are anxious to
welcome in a new era of emphasis on renewable energy production. But even as the country goes to the polls,
we're preparing for San
Francisco's Greenfest Nov 14-16,with pre-conference
workshops during "Greenweek," Nov 9-16. Most importantly, don't forget our third annual Green Career Conference at the UC
Berkeley campus, scheduled for Nov 22.
Keep an eye on the website solarliving.org, where our
2009 classes will soon be listed, some early next month. In January
we'll have our full catalog published with workshops in Renewable Energy, Solar,
Biofuels, Green
Building, Permaculture and other topics for sustainable living.
As we wind down 2008 and strategize for next year and
beyond, we are looking forward to many great opportunities - enhancing our
intern program, improving our 12-acre demonstration site, upgrading our training
facilities, generating greater involvement with the green collar jobs program,
and preparing workshops that are better than ever.
But we do need your help. Please join us, either as a workshop participant, or as a financial partner. It is your support, through your
contributions or efforts, that sustain our ongoing programs and let us help
create a future we can all live with.
For the Earth,
Karen Kallen

Celebrating Tax Credit Extensions! Good News for the RE Industry
Tax Credits Extended: Renewable Energy Industry Breathes Sigh of Relief
by Graham Jesmer & Stephen Lacey
The tax credit package...will extend the Production Tax Credit for one year and the Investment Tax Credit for eight
years. The extensions would be at least partially paid for by a change
in the tax code for the oil and gas industry. The bill also contains removal of the US $2,000 cap for residential solar installations.
"Solar is becoming a competitive energy source that can address our
nation's growing energy demands with a clean, reliable and renewable
source of power. The solar industry is now scaling up to bring down
manufacturing and installation costs, build its infrastructure, grow
public awareness, and attract customers. The 8-year extension of the
solar investment tax credit will help the solar industry flourish to
its full potential"

The Chickens have Arrived...
The interns are especially thrilled to have completed their chicken coop project and to welcome a dozen laying chickens. The hens have been here at the Solar Living Center for a mere 24 hours - yet they've already produced a couple of eggs!
