Greetings,

Hello from Hopland!

We have lots to be grateful for this time of Thanksgiving.  The colors of fall are spectacular at the Solar Living Center, showcasing among the mists and fogs settling over the pond.  More importantly the winds of change have blown through, both nationally and globally, with our new President Elect, Obama!

We're gearing up for our Green Career Conference - this Saturday.  We have some dynamite speakers and workshops sure to bring you current with the employment opportunities in the green economy.  The burgeoning green economy is the truly bright spot as we watch the old and outdated systems implode.  We'll see you there at the UC Berkeley campus on Nov 22 -- Come and meet some of the SLI staff and say good-bye to our interns, whose internships are ending this week.  A big shout-out goes to all of our hard-working and creative interns as they move on to other adventures.

We've begun posting 2009 classes on our website solarliving.org, check it out -- new classes are being added daily and as they become available.  Early next year we'll have our full catalog published with workshops in Renewable Energy, Solar, Biofuels, Green Building, Permaculture and other topics for sustainable living.

For the Earth,

Karen Kallen
Managing Director

Hawaii poised to Lead in Renewable Race

The effort, which began in January between the state and U.S. Department of Energy, seeks to move Hawaii toward having 70 percent of its energy use come from clean energy sources by 2030.  Here are just a few of
the proposals:
  • The construction of an undersea cable connecting Maui, Molokai and Lānai into one electrical grid to allow the integration of an additional 400 MW of renewable wind power generated in Maui County for transmission to Oahu.
  • A requirement that 40 percent of electric power come from renewable resources by 2030, doubling the current Renewable Portfolio Standard requirement law.
  • A feed-in tariff system designed to dramatically accelerate the addition of renewable energy from new sources by providing published purchased power prices for renewable power providers, which would encourage increased development of alternative energy projects.
  • Seeking prompt approvals from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission for the immediate deployment of advanced meters and for implementation of time-of-use rates that reward customers with lower electric rates for using power during off-peak times. This change will support the development of a "smart grid" to allow customers far greater control of their energy use and their electricity bills.

Power From the People

"Distributed generation
- power created by consumers - is expected to play a larger part in solving the energy and environmental challenges facing the nation."

One of SLI's PV Class alumna, Revone Bauwens, has made a name for herself by installing solar panels on her house in Indiana, and by being a model for living green, as reported by Indiana's Touchstone Energy's Cooperative.
