People Power at Times Square - New Year's Eve

Greetings!

Warmest of Season's Greetings to You!

We've now passed the Winter Solstice, and as we round the corner in approach to a New Year - we've taken some time to reflect upon 2008 at the Solar Living Institute.

Even with the economic downturn this year, our Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Workshop  programs have continued to be in demand and show every sign of increasing expansion next year.

The Green Career Conference was well-attended by seekers of a professional niche within the burgeoning green industry.  Those in attendance learned about career-change options, industry trends and took the opportunity to participate in some targeted networking.  We hope to roll out a Southern California version of the Green Career Conference next spring.

We said "goodbye" to many long-time SLI employees as each took the next step in their own careers -- Coral Mills, Doron Amiran, Lindsay Dailey and others.  Our new crew is constantly reminded of and acknowledges the foundation laid by the dedication of the many individuals that has made the SLI the respected organization that it is today.  Appreciative thanks goes out to each of you.

Our next newsletter will be chock-full of announcements for 2009...SLI on-line workshops, expanded class locations, grant awards, new affiliations...a few hints at lots of great opportunities for the year ahead.  So stay tuned!

For the Earth,

Karen Kallen

 End-Of-Year Donations

'Tis the giving season and we ask for your support in keeping our efforts viable in bringing green, environmental education to a host of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

From the busloads of school kids visiting our 12-acre demonstration site, and our young adult interns staying with us for a season, to our workshop participants fulfilling their desire to become stewards of the Earth while earning a living, and our outreach into underserved communities, your financial contributions mean the world to us and to the world, a greener future.

We greatly appreciate any amount received - be it $20, $200, $2,000 or more.

In 2008 we:
  • Inspired over 1,000 children with hands-on demonstration.
  • Reached out to low-income urban youth in Richmond.
  • Trained hundreds of future solar installers.
  • Educated thousands of workshop participants in green building and sustainable lifestyle topics.

Please make a generous year-end contribution, so that we can move into 2009 with the resources we need to continue to meet the increasingly crucial needs of these difficult times.

None of this would have been even remotely possible without your continued generous support, and for this we offer you heartfelt thanks.

 SLI presents:   Andy Black Workshops

The Solar Living Institute is delighted to be teaming up again this year with industry expert Andy Black.  Andy's high-caliber workshops are a must for solar salespeople, sales managers or solar business owners.  On January 26th, SLI will offer Solar Sales and Marketing followed by Economics of Solar on January 27th.  Both courses will be held at the Green Building Exchange in South San Francisco.

Seemingly in defiance of the nation's economic woes, the solar industry keeps churning out optimistic news. The most recent a projection from New Energy Finance saying that the cost for photovoltaics is set to drop more than 30% in the coming year. Lower costs coupled with the extension of the ITC and the election of a renewable energy-friendly president will surely translate into huge growth opportunities in the Solar Industry. (Read more at Renewable Energy World.)

Now, more than ever, the need for knowledgeable, effective solar salespeople is paramount.

Are you a current or future solar salesperson?  Do you own, manage, or market for a solar business? If so, don't miss these important courses:

At our highly successful Green Career Conference last month, a recurring theme kept popping up session after session:  Solar Careers are taking off.

Are you curious about the solar industry?  Have you thought about a career transition into this booming field?  Want to know where to start?  We have just the workshop for you!

On January 16th Solar industry insider Liz Merry will provide a high-speed tour of the industry in her highly rated course, Solar Careers and Industry Opportunities.  The workshop, which focuses primarily on grid-tied photovoltaics, gives an excellent overview of the solar industry.

Liz covers the many factors that explain why solar is becoming a mainstream energy solution.  Participants end the day with a strong sense of "next steps" on their path to a rewarding career in solar.  Questions and networking are strongly encouraged.

This workshop will be held at the Green Building Exchange in South San Francisco.  Click here for directions.

Talkin 'Bout A Revolution:

 Filling 5 Million Green Jobs
 by:  Dexter Gauntlett

"...A new opportunity is emerging in clean technology. A once-in-a-lifetime generational shift is occurring."

Indeed, president-elect Obama has stated the goal of creating 5 million 'green jobs' by 2018. And many economists, investors, business leaders, and politicians now consider the growth and development of clean technology as the best single opportunity for moving the U.S. out of its current economic malaise.  Read the entire article.
